AVEVA PI & Asset Framework
Architecture, data modelling, migration and optimisation - including the Asset Framework problems that get harder the longer they are left alone.
Architecture · Data Modelling · Migration · Optimisation
Specialist engineering and consulting for AVEVA PI, industrial historians and operational data.
Helping utilities and industrial organisations solve the difficult problems that sit between OT, data and the enterprise - from architecture and migration through to integration and optimisation.

Difficult problems
Typical problems
When an industrial data project has become complicated, the architecture is not holding together, or an existing system needs to be understood before anyone can safely change it, SES provides senior engineering expertise to get to the bottom of it.
01
Complex asset models, migrations, context that has drifted from reality, and AF structures that have become hard to maintain.
02
Performance and storage problems, consolidation across platforms, data quality issues, and multi-system environments nobody fully understands.
03
Legacy OT that needs to connect to modern platforms, and decisions about what should change - where the right answer is not obvious.
Where I help
I help utilities and industrial organisations make sense of the systems and data that sit between the plant floor and the business.

02
Historian strategy, integration, consolidation, contextualisation and data quality across PI, Canary and other platforms.

03
Connecting SCADA, PLC and DCS systems with the data platforms that sit above them, and the communications and integration between them.

Turning operational data into useful analysis and predictive insight - practical industrial AI, applied once the underlying data can be trusted.
Predictive Analytics · Machine Learning · Industrial AI
When the problem is complicated, I bring the engineering experience to work out what actually needs to be done.
Why SES
01
No product platform to sell and no vendor programme to satisfy. Recommendations are the only thing being sold.
02
30+ years hands-on across industrial automation, software and data, with an Engineering degree in Instrumentation & Control.
03
Working across OT, historians and enterprise data - the ground where difficult industrial problems actually live.
04
Engineering judgement rather than transformation theatre. Incremental paths, not big-bang programmes.
Sectors
Electricity and water - the sectors where historian estates are large, long-lived, and genuinely hard to re-platform. The work has also spanned manufacturing, food processing, airports and process industries, but these are the sectors SES is built around.

FAQ
Including what this practice does not do.
01
A specialist industrial data consultancy focused on AVEVA PI and enterprise historian work - most often PI Asset Framework design and difficult migrations.
02
A Nelson, New Zealand-based consultant with over 30 years of industrial engineering experience across automation, software and data, and an Engineering degree in Instrumentation & Control. Most of that time has been spent in the space between the control system and the enterprise platform.
03
Analytics and AI sit on top of the data work rather than standing alone. Predictive models are only worth building once the underlying historian data can be trusted - so the foundation comes first, and AI is what becomes possible afterwards.
04
Where it solves an industrial data problem, yes. Steve builds software as well as configuring and delivering PI, which matters when the integration is genuinely awkward - though application development tends to arrive as part of the data work rather than as the reason for the engagement.
05
Yes - as target architecture for the industrial data estate, not as a broad transformation programme. In practice it means deciding what a PI or historian landscape should look like over the next few years, and getting there incrementally rather than through a big-bang replacement.
06
Utilities, mainly: electricity generation and distribution, water and wastewater. That is where historian estates are large, long-lived, and genuinely hard to re-platform. Experience extends to other industrial environments, but these are the sectors the practice is built around.
07
Most work arrives by referral - from AVEVA, from integrators who resell PI, and from clients who have had a migration done well. A standing retainer with one or two organisations is also a common arrangement.

09
Email Steve directly. A short description of the historian problem is enough to start a useful conversation.
